I'm exhausted. This has been a long day & a long week. I think I'm going to leave work early so I can early vote & work-out before dinner. In the meantime, I'm trying not to fall asleep at my desk.
Lake Fever's 8 off 8th @ Mercy Lounge Monday night was a HUGE success. I'm so proud of John, Joe & Jason. Joe did a great job putting the event together. It was definitely the biggest crowd I've ever seen at an 8 off 8th event. I took some pictures, but haven't had time to upload them yet. I'll post the link once I get them uploaded.
In related news, Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads will be in John's studio tomorrow. He's producing our friend, Ben Elkins', CD. I don't know about you, but I think this is tres cool.

Apocalypse Now

Well, I did pretty good on my new workout plan. I worked out Thurs, Fri & Sat. Didn't go yesterday, but 3 out of 4 isn't bad.
Yesterday John & I saw Cloverfield. I liked it, although it was weird seeing NYC completely destroyed... Last week the History Channel aired this documentary called Life After People. I TiVoed it & we watched it last night. It was interesting. The best part was when they showed NYC 50 years after the extinction of people & cats were living in skyscrapers. Cat condos John & I called them. It was really funny. FYI -cats can live the longest with humans. After that, they ran this other show about how the world will allegedly end Dec. 21, 2012. I can't remember what it was called, but it freaked me out. It was way too much end of the world stuff for a Sunday afternoon.... But Life After People was really good. I'm sure they'll re-run it. I definitely recommend watching it.
I have a lot going on today. We have Session at 5:oo, State of the State at 6:00, reception afterwards from 6:30-8:30, then Lake Fever's 8 of 8th @ Mercy Lounge from 9:00-forever. Tomorrow morning is going to be rough.....
In closing, I'd like to give a shout out to my friend, MK -get well soon!

Juno
Juno was hilarious. I really liked it. The music was good, too. I may have to pick up the soundtrack today.
Well, it's 7am on a Saturday & I'm awake. I think I'm going to go work out (as soon as the sleep creases on my face dissipate a little). I read a couple more chapters of Kite Runner last night. That book is killing me. As soon as I think nothing else catastrophic can happen, it does. Don't get me wrong, I love the book, but emotionally, it's wearing me out. It's one of the few books I've read that brings me to tears. I can't wait to finish it & see the movie. Maybe next weekend.
Today I'm getting my hair cut. I think I'm going to get a couple inches taken off. I've realized (after watching Medium) that I like it more on the short side. Then tonight we're going to Cinco to celebrate our friend David's bday. I think we're going bowling afterwards. Should be a lot of fun.
I'm off to the gym!

Thursday

Last year during Session I was training for the half marathon & getting up every morning at 4:45 to get a 90 minute run in before work. This was before I ruined my hip, spent 3 months in physical therapy & was subsequently banned from running. I digress... This year I don't feel like getting up early to work out, so my new plan is to skip the gym Mon-Wed & try & make myself work out Thurs, Fri, Sat & Sun. Today is the 1st day. We'll see how it goes. I brought my gym clothes to work, so there's really no excuse. Are you listening, TiVo?
I also created a mini home-gym of sorts over the weekend. I bought two 5 lb hand weights, two 10 lb hand weights & one of those big balls. I got up about 20 minutes early Tues & Wed & did some basic strength training & ab work. Not a lot, but better than nothing. I think I'm going to get one of those big rubber bands this weekend so I can do some lower body work, too. There's this class at the Green Hills Y on Sundays called the Bottom Line. MK & I are going to try & start going. God knows my "bottom line" could use some work.
I haven't lost any weight since before Christmas, so I'm hoping the exercise will kick it back into gear. I haven't gained any weight either, but I'm clearly at my "plateau". I'd really like to lose another 10-15 lbs. And maintain it. We'll see, we'll see....

There Will Be Dreams
John & I saw There Will Be Blood on Sunday. OHMYGODILOVEYOUDANIELDAYLEWIS! Aside from my obvious DDL obsession, the movie was amazing. Way better than both Sweeney Todd & No Country For Old Men. I've got plans to see Juno on Fri night with Natalie & Holly. Pretty excited about Juno. I also want to see Persepolis. Maybe on Sunday....
Speaking of movies, I watched a really good DVD this weekend called The Lives of Others. It was a Netflix rec, but it was right on. Both John & I really liked it. Definitely recommend it. Side note for anyone who hates subtitles, it's in German.
I've got my 2nd class @ TSU tomorrow night. None of the books I bought on half.com have arrived. I'm a little worried, but luckily our reading assignments don't start until next week. Maybe he recognizes that most of his students buy their books online....
Work is already really busy, but it's not too stressful yet. Yet. Just low on free time.
Allright, I've got to get back to Biggest Loser.
RIP, Heath Ledger.

Batshit Crazy Hygienist
Thursday was John's bday. His friend Jon took us to a Predators game, then we met up with some people @ Red Door East, where John proceeded to get pretty drunk. It was fun to watch. We had a really good time. Thanks to everyone who came.
So yesterday I had a dentist appt. There was a new hygienist who was batshit crazy. She talked my ear off throughout the entire cleaning. Afterwards, she was making small talk while we waited on the dentist to come in & she asked where I work. I told her & she said, "So who are you voting for?" (Inappropriate remark #1) I was trying to be polite, so I told her I haven't decided yet, but it will probably be either Barack or Hillary, to which she hastily replied, "Well, I'm a Republican & I vote for the most qualified candidate; I don't just vote down the party line." Fine, whatever lady. But oh no, she's not done. Then she starts telling me how disappointed she is in Fred Thompson & how she's joined the Ron Paul camp. Again, whatever. Then she asks me if I knew Ron Paul used to be an OB-Gyn in Texas...
Me: "no"
Crazy: "Well, he was on The View the other day talking about how he opposes 3rd trimester abortions & you know he was so convincing that he almost had all those liberal pro-choice women on The View over on the RIGHT SIDE"
Seriously, this was the exchange -verbatim. Right then as I was about to leap out of my chair & strangle her with my bib, Dr. Horne walked in. Lucky bitch. I meant to call when I got back to the office & complain, but I didn't have time. I'm calling Monday. That crazy bitch is going down. It was like having my teeth cleaned at the Rescue Mission.
Things like this happen to me all the time. I attract crazy.

1st Day of Class
Tonight was my first class. It was interesting... It wasn't really a class, but more of a going over of the syllabus. My one class requires 4, yes 4, textbooks. The instructor told us it would be around $225 total for all 4 books in the campus bookstore. I got all 4 on half.com for $46. Total. So screw you campus bookstore.
Back to my class. I think it's going to be good. Almost everyone in there is a state employee so we're all pretty familiar with the general ins & outs of government. Our instructor opened the class by talking about a bill Kurita's carrying to add Civics to middle school curriculum. It was very surreal to actually be on the Senate floor sitting directly behind Kurita at 4pm & an hour later sitting in a class talking about bills she's carrying. If the class stays on this route, I'll definitely have an advantage.
So I just got off the phone with my good friend Roberto in the NYC. It was fun talking to him & filling him in on all the lame Nashville gossip. When Rob lived here, we'd go to lunch (Calypso) pretty regularly & gossip like a pair of old hens. Ahh, how I miss those days....
John's bday is tomorrow. I have plans for tomorrow night, but he doesn't know what they are, so I'm keeping my mouth shut for now. I think we're doing East-side drinks afterwards, so maybe we'll see some of you bitches at the bar. 9:00/10:00-ish? Call me.

Mule in the City Paper
I read Libby Callaway's column, The Style Arbiter, in the City Paper every Wednesday. Last week, I emailed her in regards to her column about dressing your age. Part of my email made it into her column this week. I'm famous!
http://www.nashvillecitypaper.com/news.php?viewStory=58540
In case you can't figure it out, here's the part that's from my email:
A woman a decade her junior — a 31-year-old who works in the state Legislature — weighed in thusly: “I tend to stand out in a sea of pant suits. I often wonder, especially during session, if it’s bad that I look more like the interns rather than the staff. I own my fair share of suits and I certainly wear them, but come Friday, I’m in my skinny jeans with my black boots pulled up over them.
“It’s not that I’m trying to look 22, I just enjoy getting dressed every morning and putting different things together. But I do wonder if at some point I’m going to have to give it up and start ‘dressing my age.’”
God bless you, Libby Callaway. God bless you....

Three Cups of Tea

I keep meaning to mention this book, Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortenson. Tiffany gave it to me & I read it over Christmas. It is a fantastic book. I think it's something everyone should read. It's available in paperback & it's a quick read, so there's really no excuse. I'll even provide an Amazon link for those of you that want to buy it:
Seriously, it's that good. Do yourself a favor & READ THIS BOOK.

Blah Blah Blah
I didn't do much this weekend. Watched a lot of TiVo. Finished Season 2 of Weeds -very good by the way. Wonder when Season 3 comes out... Also watched Blame It On Fidel. It was interesting. The little girl who played the main character was pretty cute.
John & I were going to see There Will Be Blood until we realized it hasn't opened in Nashville yet. Not sure when it does, but hopefully soon. I really want to see it. Grrr...
Not a lot going on right now, just busy at work. My class starts on Wed. I guess I need to get some sort of school supplies for my class, but not sure what I even need. Trapper Keeper maybe....
So today, for whatever reason, everyone everywhere commented on how much weight I've lost. I've lost about 20 lbs, but I've weighed the same for about a month now, so I don't really know why everyone seemed to just now notice.... My boss said something, my landlord said something... Don't get me wrong, I'll take the compliments, just weird that no one's noticed until now. Maybe it was the suit I wore today that was clearly 2 sizes too big. Mental note: GET SUITS TAILORED.
Allright, that's it. I don't have anything interesting to say & I've got TiVo to watch. Shalom.

Dr. Mule?
It's official, I'm a grad student. Today I registered for the one class I'm taking this semester, Seminar in Public Administration. I went by TSU on my way home tonight & picked up my student ID. It's weird having a student ID again. I need to remember to use it at places that give student discounts....
For those of you who don't know, I'm enrolled in the MPA (masters of public administration) program at TSU. It's the program former Nashville Mayor Bill Purcell is now the dean of. I can only take one class in the spring while we're in Session, but I'm going to ramp up in the summer & fall & hopefully finish in 2-ish years. They also offer a PhD, so, who knows, I may keep going.
Well, the cold/SARS that plagued me all weekend has finally subsided. Spent all day Fri, Sat, Sun in the house -going crazy. I'm still congested, but definitely feeling better. John took pity on me Sun afternoon & took me to the movies (much to the chagrin of everyone else in the theater because I coughed & sniffed the entire time). We saw No Country For Old Men. VERY good movie, highly recommend it.
Next on my movie list (thanks to Tiffany's reminder today) is There Will Be Blood, the new movie by PT Anderson. I love PT, I own all his movies on DVD, but I can't lie, I'm going to see Daniel Day Lewis. I love that man. As I told Tiff today, if Gangs of New York weren't so long, I'd watch it before bed every night so I could have sweet mustache dreams....

Infected
I usually get sick ever year between Christmas & New Year's. I somehow managed not to get sick this Christmas, even after spending an entire day trapped on a plane in Denver. Well, my luck ran out. My boss decided it would be a good idea to come to work last week, even though he had been sick. I told him it would be a bad idea to risk getting me sick with Session starting on Monday. He told me he was on antibiotics & wasn't contagious..... I've been sick since Friday. I could kill him.
I just woke up & I think I feel better. My head hurts from sinus pressure, but my throat doesn't hurt anymore & my cough is getting better. I probably have a sinus infection. Great.
So I'm about to make a grocery list & go to Publix, since I haven't been grocery shopping in about 3 weeks now. May the force be with me.....

Oh TiVo, You So Crazy!

As of Tuesday, I'm the proud new owner of a TiVo. I couldn't be happier. I used to have the Comcast version, but had to give it up when I moved into this apartment well over a year ago. Since then, I've been recording shows on my VCR, living like the Slowskis. I won't lie, it's been rough.
I'm still learning how to use all of TiVo's functions, but I'm pretty happy so far. I spent about an hour last night programming all of my favorite shows. I'm kind of concerned though, because when I got home tonight it had recorded a bunch of shows it thought I would like.... They're all bad. Crossing Jordan, bad. Super Sweet Sixteen, really bad. Bad Girls Club, I don't even know what this is but apparently it airs on Oxygen, so I can only imagine. It seems the TiVo has a ways to go before "getting to know me", but I still love her. She'll learn.
Tonight John & I are going with Adam & Sarah to eat at one of my favorite restaurants, Chinatown, said "HELLOCHINATOWN!" I could marry their beef lo mien. After dinner we're going to see Sweeney Todd. Very excited about this. First of all, I love musicals. Secondly, Johnny Depp. And don't even get me started on my love affair with Tim Burton and HBC. I love her. It's unhealthy.
Totally unrelated to either TiVo or HBC, the Iowa caucuses are tonight. I'm still favoring Obama, though I'm 99% sure Hillary will get the nomination. Very curious as to how tonight will turn out...

Turn and Face the Fat

First day back at work. Clearly, I'm busy... So I did the dreaded deed this morning, I weighed myself. Gained 5 lbs. I guess that's pretty normal for Christmas time. It didn't help being on the road all last week & having to eat fast food & truck stop snacks for 6 straight days. Plus I drank about 1,000 beers on New Years Eve, that's easily 3 of the 5 lbs. Whatever!
Speaking of last week, I had, quite possibly, the best Christmas ever this year. I flew out to ABQ last Tues & then John & I drove to Flagstaff on Wed, stopping at all the Route 66 sites along the way. We spent the night in the best hotel EVER in Flagstaff. It's called Little America Hotel. It was decorated for Christmas & it was so pretty. On Wed, we drove around Wupatki Nat'l Park & tromped around old Indian ruins all afternoon. It was actually a lot of fun. On Thurs, we got up & drove to the Grand Canyon. I knew the Grand Canyon would be incredible, but I really underestimated how much so. It was amazing. We stayed there all day, then drove back to ABQ & spent the night. On Fri, we got up & drove to OK, birthplace of moi. We spent Fri & Sat night with my grandparents in Okarche. We went to the OKC bombing memorial, ate the best steak I've ever had & John bought a year's worth of western wear... On Sun, we got up & drove back home, stopping at a few more Route 66 sites & at the Clinton Library in Little Rock. All in all, it was an amazing trip. And I have about 250 pictures documenting it all...
My life/schedule is about to get tres busy. We go back into Session on Monday & I start school in about 2 weeks. So I'll basically be MIA until May/June, depending on how long Session goes this year.
I spent all day yesterday uploading pictures to Flickr, so please enjoy!
