It's so bizarre to not know someone well, but know how important something is - and this is HUGE. Saying "I'm proud of you" feels condescending and too personal, but I don't know what else to say. How about: "This was inspirational. The transformation of your body and your dedication to this race and lifestyle is incredible. And I'm just in awe." Congrats to you - what a major big deal!
