The Story of Linda, Part One
Today is my dog's birthday. Our guess is she's 13 years old, but who knows. I've been working on a short story about my dog, and I hadn't planned on sharing it, but it's her birthday and a special girl deserves a special birthday. This story is unedited and unfinished. Maybe I'll keep writing it and keep sharing it. Enjoy.
***
Linda is my dog. Full name: Linda McCartney [Baldwin]. She hails from Pegram in Cheatham County. When John and I got married and bought a house, I immediately started looking for a dog. I grew up with dogs and had been waiting until I lived somewhere where I could have a dog again. This was in 2009, and the website Petfinder was one of the best ways to find a dog. I spent my days scrolling Petfinder, looking at “corgi mixes”. I wanted either a corgi or a cattle dog. Turns out, I got both of those things, all in one glorious, ridiculous dog.
When I found Linda’s picture on Petfinder, I knew she was the one. She was a black and white corgi Australian shepherd mix with a cloud eye and floppy ears. Her Petfinder name was Sophie. Sophie was five years old, house-trained, current on all of her shots, and being adopted out by a rescue group called Cheatham County Paws.
I inquired about Sophie and was told she would be at an adoption fair that coming weekend. I asked if I could see her before then. I assumed she lived on a big farm where this rescue group kept all of their animals. Wrong. Sophie was at Cheatham County Animal Control. When I learned that, I got in my car and drove out there.
I don’t know what the animal control facilities are like where you live, but where I live, they’re notoriously pretty terrible, and this one was no exception. It’s basically like visiting a dog in jail. The woman in charge was sitting behind a glass partition eating takeout from McDonald’s and was visibly aggravated that I was there. The place smelled like nothing I’ve ever smelled before, like dog shit and despair. I told her I knew which dog I was looking for and, without getting up from her lunch, she told me I was welcome to go back to where the dogs were kept and look for Sophie.
Again, none of this is what I expected. I thought Sophie was running around on a farm eating homemade dog treats from a commune of women who drive around looking for stray dogs. When I opened the large steel door that led into the kennel, the stench almost knocked me out. I had to cover my mouth. My eyes were watering. The cages went floor to ceiling and were filled with pit bull mixes, all except one. Sophie was the only dog in her own cage, and the only dog who knew to shit in one corner and sleep in another. I had found my dog.
A teenage boy appeared out of nowhere and asked if I’d like to take her outside while he cleaned her cage. He put a rope around her neck and handed me the end and I walked out the way I came in and took Sophie outside to the piece of grass between the parking lot and the Cheatham County Animal Control sign. She was wet and trembling and looked at me with eyes that said, “Lady, I’m going to die in here if you don’t take me home with you.” Message received. I took some pictures of her to send to my husband and drove back to my office. A few days later, my husband and I drove back out there and adopted her. She cost $150. I imagine that buys a lot of combo meals at McDonald’s.
The rescue group was in the process of getting Sophie spayed. The appointment was made and paid for, we just had to take her. We brought our new dog home, named her Linda McCartney and she spent one night with us before we were to take her to her vet to get spayed. The vet’s office was great, they knew Sophie/Linda because they had already given her all of her shots and they worked with the Cheatham County Paws rescue group. They told me the regular vet was on vacation and a visiting vet from Knoxville would be doing Linda’s surgery. They would call me that afternoon to tell me how she did. So I went to work. At this time, I worked in the state legislature, and they were in session, so when I got the call from the vet that afternoon, I was sitting behind my boss, a state senator, on the floor of the senate in the state capitol building. It was in that seat, behind my boss, who’s mic was on, when I said into my phone, “You gave her an abortion?!”
I learned a lot about animal reproductivity that day. For instance, did you know that if a dog is pregnant and gets a rabies vaccination, that pregnancy is no longer viable? The vaccine deforms the in-utero puppies. I know. When the vet called me that day, she said, in this order, “The surgery went fine. Linda is in recovery. She was pregnant.” She also told me that Linda appeared to have been impregnated by a pit bull, and that they guessed that this would have been her fifth litter of puppies. Linda’s been around the block!
Hilarious side story. I have young nieces and when they met Linda, they were fascinated with her rows of nipples and asked me if Linda was a mom. Shit. They always ask me questions that I don’t know how to answer. So I told them that yes, Linda was a mom, which of course led to a line of questioning about where her babies are, does she miss them, is she sad, etc. They kept lovingly stroking her head and cooing, “Oh, momma Linda, don’t be sad.” It was very sweet, and very funny.
I learned from the rescue group that Linda had been at animal control for months. She was a stray that the dog catcher caught and brought in. Because she looks primarily like a corgi, they assumed she was missing and made flyers for her and took her to all of the adoption fairs, but no one ever called about her or claimed her. Someone had owned her because she was house-trained. A few years later I was talking to a County Mayor, who was also a farmer, and he told me that his county’s animal control office gets dogs who are riding in the backs of trucks that are driving through town - the dog jumps out at a red light, the owner doesn’t realize it, the dog ends up in animal control, and the owner has no idea which town he left his dog in. I showed him a picture of Linda and he said, “Oh, she was a farm dog.”
This story of Linda being a truck-jumping farm dog is hard to believe because of her short stature, but it’s better than the alternative. That she was a stray dog in Cheatham County, living on the streets, eating trash, drinking rain water, and raising five litters of puppies. She’s house-trained. She had to have lived with someone. I’ll never know.
One year passes. We love Linda and her presence in our house, even though all she does is sleep. We don’t think anything about it, she’s a five year old dog, she’s not an energetic puppy. We tell ourselves she loves us even though she she’d rather stare at us from across the room than sit next to us and let us pet her. Herding dogs, am I right?
It’s time to take Linda back to the vet for her one year checkup. Instead of taking her back to the vet who performed her surgery, I took her to a “value” vet that all of my friends convinced me was a perfectly legitimate place to take my dog. A well woman appointment for a dog includes taking her weight, administering her state-mandated rabies vaccination, and checking for heartworms.
No dog likes the vet, and Linda was having a strong reaction to being in this facility. She was shaking, whimpering and had her tail between her legs. They also took her away from me and performed all of these procedures while I sat out front in the waiting room. A technician brings Linda back out to me and tells me she has heartworms. They want to run the test one more time to make sure, so I wait. While I’m waiting, both the tech and the front desk clerk tell me how “very, very sorry” they are. They keep petting Linda and asking me how old she is, which is followed again with how “very, very sorry” they are. It finally clicks and I realize they’re sad because they know I’m going to have to have Linda put down. The vet comes out and confirms this - that Linda has heartworms, that it’s advanced and at her age, there’s not anything else they can do. Then they try to ask me if I want to go ahead and schedule the appointment to have her put down. Not on my watch, lady. All of the maternal genes I’ve spent my whole life ignoring kick in, I pick Linda up and run to my car, tears streaming down my face. I call my husband, sobbing, “They’re trying to kill Linda!” I don’t even remember where he was working during this time, but wherever it was, he left and was at our house by the time I got there with Linda. He had a friend who’s family had a veterinary clinic in Georgia who, astoundingly, was known for saving the lives of dogs with heartworms. We called and they could take her, so we got in the car and drove five hours to Georgia.

Weekend Wrap Up: Popping Tags Edition
Oh hey, my face. While it was sleeting on Friday night, I kept warm under a blanket of chemicals and aluminum foil. Like the US Postal Service, neither rain, sleet, nor snow can keep me from my bi-monthly hair appointment. Also, for those keeping score at home, I didn't cut my hair. I'm not stopping until I achieve Crystal Gayle status. Apparently.
So the good news is, my fancy, new bike trainer is so quiet that Linda can sleep through my living room work-outs. The bad news is, Linda sleeps through my living room work-outs, #rude.
My friend April started an Article Club. She posted three articles online and we met at her house to discuss. We read this, this and this. As you may have deduced from my going off of Facebook for a month, I don't search out opportunities for tenuous conversation. But I've known April a long time and I trust her, plus few things get me going like group activities and meeting new people. There was also pizza and wine, so... duh.
I had a blast! April did a great job curating the right mix of attendees. We varied in age from 29-40+, single/divorced vs. married/re-married, children vs. no children, corporate vs. self-employed, cat vs. dog. It worked. We had real awesome, real respectful, real-talk. I had so much fun and can't wait for the next one.
My Sunday lady gang is a little disbanded at the moment, so I ended up running on my own yesterday. Sundays are supposed to be my long runs, but I keep not actually running long distances. I hurt my knees running that half marathon in December, so I've been slowing building back up. I ran five miles in Shelby yesterday, pretty fast: 10:22, 10:25, 10:26, 10:04, 9:34. Hooray, almost negative splits!
Because I don't have any friends anymore (kidding, kidding), I didn't do my post-run breakfast biscuit at Dose, so I was STARVING. John and I went to lunch at Kien Giang. Y'all, I'm not even kidding, I ate that banh mi as an appetizer.
File under: Duh. John and I are going to the Grammy's next week. There are three events that I need outfits for and finding those outfits will stand to be the greatest stressor of my life. Have I enlisted the help of a stylist? Yes. Have I ordered everything from everywhere? Yes. Do I have any idea what I'm wearing? No.
I found a gold blazer on Nasty Gal that I tried to buy only to find it exists solely in Mary Kate Olsen size. I've since made it my mission to find a gold blazer. I kind of found one. I think. I found this guy at the Rivergate Goodwill yesterday, where, pro tip, their blazer game is ON POINT. It's Calvin Klein and it appears to be brand new. It may need to be taken in a little, so we'll see (more pics on Flickr). To be continued...

Weekend Wrap Up: Yes Please Edition
Friday night manicure. Essie No More Film and Sephora Only Gold For Me glitter topcoat.
Early Saturday morning I took a 5-mile performance test at Endeavor Performance. It was real hard. I went HAM. I came in 4th place. The End!
I rode so hard, y'all. I was in 5th place the first half of the ride. As I started getting close to the person in 4th place, I was able to pass her and stay ahead of her. It's probably the fastest I've ever ridden. Todd crouched down behind me for the last few minutes and got me to sprint to the end and keep my 4th place status. When it was over, I stood up on my bike to relieve my soft bits and tipped over. Why? HAM, that's why.
Parnassus Books turned 3 over the weekend and to celebrate, emailed 20% off coupons to use in the store on Saturday. Yes Please by Amy Poehler? Don't mind if I do! Buying books at Parnassus is one of my favorite things to do in Nashville. Second only to yelling "Hello!" to Ann Patchett when I run past her walking her dog in the morning. A behavior I'm simultaneously embarrassed about and unable to stop. I love everyone that works in Parnassus, but I especially love Bill. When I was checking out, Bill said, "My, look at your nails!", which is pretty much the highest compliment you can pay me.
John's car is a truck now. A fact that we're both hilariously in denial about. But we got our first truck request over the weekend. Friends Keith and Nicole (Urban, yes) needed help with a couch. I snapped this pic of Linda on our way out because it's the way she looks at us every time we go somewhere, like she couldn't be more disappointed in us. Because I like to come up with pun-y memoir titles in my spare time, I came up with this one for Linda, Where Are You Guys Going: The Linda McCartney Story.
Melanie and I were scheduled to run 6 miles on Sunday. The weather has not been kind to us. The temperature for our Friday run was 18 degrees, and on Sunday, it was POURING. And also still really cold. Six miles isn't that far, so we ran our 6 rainy miles and then treated ourselves to coffee and breakfast biscuits at Dose.
A few hours after my rain-run, I started to feel sick, which should surprise no one who tracked my fitness this weekend. I decided pho would make me feel better, so we went down the street to Vn Pho & Deli. The pho was delicious, but I am definitely sick. We spent the rest of the day on the couch watching Twin Peaks.

Weekend Wrap Up: Anniversary Edition
This weekend was our anniversary. On Friday I stayed in, painted my nails and watched Mortified Nation on Netflix. Have you seen that? It's pretty hilarious and I highly recommend it.
Saturday morning I finally took a class at Endeavor Performance. I say finally because people have been telling me to take this class for a year. Congratulations, you all win. This class was awesome. It was also my first time on my bike since Augusta, which was 6 weeks ago. Oops! And ouch.
Todd is offering some free classes right now. I took a free beginner class on Saturday and I'm taking the free performance test this week. This is a whole other post, but it looks like I start training again in 7 weeks and, if I can swing it, these classes may be a new addition to my training. To be continued...
I spent Saturday afternoon sitting on an ice pillow and taking pictures of Linda. It's hard to tell, but her head is laying on her paws.Y'all, this dog.
Saturday was our 6-year wedding anniversary. John and I met and started dating in 2004, so this year is a cumulative 10 years together, which is so nuts, especially since 10 years ago, John was 15. Just kidding. Kind of.
For dinner Saturday night, we went to Margot. We had such an amazing time. I don't know why we don't eat there more often. I like the cozy atmosphere and the food is unbelievable. We had frog legs! And they were so good! Also, that cookie plate right now is on point. Trust.
Oy, Sunday. It was a rough start. Luckily, I just had to run 10 miles. I can do that on 1 hour of sleep (approx.) and a belly full of frog legs and wine. No problem! Sigh... I met my lady gang on Belmont Blvd and we ran Bongo to Bongo, shockingly without incident.
I stopped at the store on my way home and grabbed stuff to make crockpot dinner. I made this recipe from Erin's Food Files. It was delicious!
Still in marital celebration mode, we treated ourselves to a fancy movie. We saw Interstellar in IMAX at Opry Mills. It was totally worth it! Well, says the one Baldwin who didn't spend the rest of night reading Interstellar sub-Reddits.

Weekend Wrap Up: Tour de Dance Edition
My lady gang met early on Saturday morning to get a run in before the storms hit. It's possible we were too early as I've never been the first car parked at Shelby... We ran a speedy 5 miles & then drove in the pouring rain to the Downtown Y for yoga.
After yoga, I swung by the library & picked up a couple of books I've been on the wait list for. I started reading Delicious! this weekend & I'm into it. This should be obvious, but the Who Owns the Future? book is for John. I don't care about the future.
After lunch at home & a quick nap, I went back to the Y to get a swim in. I spent the rest of the afternoon painting my nails & lounging around. Linda spent the day dog-smiling & squinting into the sun.
On Saturday night, we met friends Adam & Julie at Lucky Bamboo for another hot pot. This time we opted for sichuan broth instead of ying yang. It was the right decision. We ate & ate & ate. It was so good.
Early on Sunday morning, I met Lana at Natchez Trace to do my first brick of the season: a 90 minute ride followed by a 2 mile run. Lana took this picture of me at the turn-around. I like to clip-out & dance at the turn-around. You know, like the professionals do. #tourdedance
The ride was harder than I expected & then I remembered, it was my first ride of the week. I usually ride three times a week, but I had been in DC for work & hadn't been on bike since last Sunday. After the ride, Lana & I quickly got our bikes in our cars, switched shoes & took off on our 2 mile run. I was supposed to run a 12 minute mile & finish in 24 minutes. It felt like we were running a 15 minute mile, but we finished at 23:55. Five seconds to spare! And with that, my first brick of the season is done. Next up: open water swim.
For Mother's Day yesterday, we all met for lunch at my parents' house. The girls are pretty into their iPads, so when Abigail came up for air, I tried to get her to take a picture with me. She asked, "Are we taking a self?" Ha! Then me, my sister & my mom wanted to take a "self" & unbeknownst to us, Abigail had snuck into the bottom of the frame. Bless her. Such a special child.

Weekend Wrap Up: Take It Outside Edition
This was a three-day weekend for me. My Friday started with an hour endurance swim and ended with Linda and I both getting groomed. Linda needed her winter coat removed and I needed my roots to be blonde again. Sadly, only one of us left with a hot pink bandana around her neck.
I spent 11 hours and 20 minutes working out last week. I'm pretty sure it was all on Saturday. My lady running group has disbanded now that Oak Barrel is over, so I'm looking at a lot of solo runs. My first one was Saturday morning, 5+ miles that I had to get in before my 8:30am yoga class. I met my friends Sarah and Erica at Belle Meade Blvd. Apparently running behind them made me faster because my splits were 11:00, 10:55, 10:37, 10:44, 10:36 and 9:59. Oh hey, negative splits.
Sarah and I peeled out of Belle Meade and drove Downtown for yoga which we made with seconds to spare. I was kind of worried about a 75 minute yoga class after a long run, but it totally worked! I wasn't sore at all. After yoga, I stayed and did weights and then met Lana at Garage Coffee Company in Marathon Village. It's my new favorite coffee spot. Pro tip: order the slingshot latte, unless you're from outer space and don't want BOURBON SEA SALT sprinkled in your latte. Also, they're really nice and have good deals on their bags of coffee.
We're operating as a one car household at the moment, so John spent Record Store Day out and about while Linda and I enjoyed the gorgeous weather. I've decided to pick back up 1Q84, which I walked away from a year or so ago. I'm a few days in and not hating it, so maybe I'll finish it this time. Maybe...
One of my favorite neighborhood spots is Kien Giang. But John never wants to eat there. They only accept cash and the service is spotty, at best. I'm fine with these things and actually love how mean the servers are. I took advantage of John's post-record store day good mood and suggested Kien Giang for dinner. This is my standard order - the vermicelli # 3 and then we shared a bahn mi. So good!
Yesterday was another gorgeous day. My allergies are brutal right now, but I can't stay inside. Lana and I took a long bike ride through Shelby. We saw a lot of our East Nasty friends who were out for their last training run before CMM. I came home and grabbed lunch with John and we spent the rest of the afternoon taming our jungle yard.

Weekend Wrap Up: Mountie Edition
I swam after work on Friday night. I know, baller. When I got home, I noticed most of my face was peeling. My derm prescribed me retin-a earlier this year for anti-aging. The retin-a plus chlorine plus the polar vortex is not a good combination. I put on my Mario Badescu azulene calming mask, and it helped, but still. Ooof.
I was real busy on Saturday morning & real not busy on Saturday afternoon. I got up & went to yoga, then stayed & lifted weights. I ran some errands, got coffee, got waxed & then came back home where I spent the afternoon competing in a lounge-off with Linda. Spoiler alert: she won. I mean, how can you compete with that?
I finished Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch on Saturday. This book, oy. I don't even know how to describe my feelings about this book, except to say I think it's the best book I've ever read. It's the first book where I read & re-read passages. I read the last page three times. And then I just cried. I'll work on a proper book review, but suffice it to say, I loved this book.
On Sunday morning, I ran 5 miles with my lady gang & then we went to Ugly Mugs for breakfast. They really do have the best oatmeal in town. We're trying to work on our half marathon time, so we ran at a set pace yesterday & we totally did it! We may be able to do a sub-2:30 half after all!
Last night John & I watched-ish the Grammy's while eating some fancy Martha Stewart beef stew I made. Linda got into the Grammy spirit by showing Pharrell that he's not the only one who looks good in a mountie hat.
John worked on 'Old Yellow Moon' by Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell & it won a Grammy for Best Americana Album, so that's cool. He also got a kick out of the performance by Willy Nelson, Kris Kristofferson & Merle Haggard because he's re-mastered albums for all three of them.
Also, can we talk about all the bolo ties? Are they trending? I'm so confused about the fashion last night. So help me if John starts wearing his bolo ties again...

Weekend Wrap Up: Paulson Baby Shower Edition
I get arbitrarily obsessed with things all the time & can't rest until I find them. Over the Christmas break, I became OBSESSED with red & black buffalo plaid shirts. When the Madewell one I wanted sold out, I went to the eBay. I found a vintage Woolrich one for $15 & thought I'd hit the jackpot. Until it arrived. Le sigh, it's a jacket, not a shirt. But it does fit, so maybe? John thinks it's awesome & is confused over my insistence that it's not a shirt. I haven't worn it yet because I don't know how... To be continued.
This is a weird graffiti wall beside Nashville Vapor on Charlotte, which, yes, means John took me to Nashville Vapor. When we left, John asked me if it was what I expected & I said, "It's like the Kings of Leon of vapor stores." He laughed & then agreed with me.
Linda's entire day revolves around which part of the living room gets direct sunlight. Her favorite time of day is when she doesn't have to get out of bed to be in the sun. This is what she was doing on Saturday after I got home from yoga & running some errands.
On Sunday, five of us hosted a baby shower for Alexis, who's due in mid-February. We had the shower at One at Cannery Row, which was awesome because there had been a wedding there the night before & they left all their wedding flowers (and cake!).
These are the amazingly awesome cupcakes Katie made for the shower. I had one million. The shower was a success. All of Alexis' friends came & she got a lot of great gifts. Thanks, everyone! Full Paulson Baby Shower photostream here.

Weekend Wrap Up: Sub-30 Edition
John was out of town this weekend, so I decided to make use of my time by attempting a gallery wall. Best laid plans... yada, yada, yada. I took down all the pictures in our house & laid them on the floor downstairs where I could see everything in one place & start moving stuff into groups. This is basically where the process stopped as I immediately became overwhelmed & unmotivated. I had a lot of stuff to frame, so I distracted myself by going to Michael's.
Wandering around Micheal's, I remembered I bought a picture at Goodwill a year ago that I meant to stencil over, a la Young House Love, but never did because... I'm REALLY BAD AT CRAFTS. Seven dollars in stencil supplies later, I decided to go for it. Why not?
This project is on-going as this painting was professionally framed, which I didn't realize until I had to get the painting out & then I 1) sliced my finger off; 2) accidentally completely disassembled the frame & backing & have no idea how to put it back together. So it's kind of finished?
I don't run a lot of 5K's anymore, but I always run the Germantown 5K Bier Run, which was this past Saturday. It's funny, turns out you run faster when you lose 20 lbs. Who knew? I don't keep track of my 5K times, so I don't know what my fastest one is, but I've never been anywhere near a 30 minute finish time. I'm usually a 12-minute mile & finish somewhere around 38 minutes (my first 5K finish time was 45 minutes). I've been running a little faster lately, and not dying, so I figured I'd try to run a 10-minute mile & finish at 30 minutes, which would be a PR. And I not only did it, I did it in under 30 minutes! I mean, by 5 seconds, but whatever! Baby's first sub-30!
Heidi set her Gamin to keep us at a 10:00 pace, but I averaged a 9:38 pace. I still have no idea how I did it. Well, aside from not talking. Oh! And my pants fell down & I unknowingly ran the first quarter mile with half of my butt showing. So maybe the lack of butt fabric sped me up? Who knows. Yay, sub-30!
L to R: Heidi, me, Sarah, Alicia, Melanie, Lana
The best part about this race is the free beer afterwards. Thanks, Yazoo! I had a million beers, got super sunburned & walked around the street festival with Lana & Jaime for a few hours, then went home & got back to work on my gallery wall.
Full Oktoberfest photostream here. Click through for Elvis pugs (!!).
After a much needed disco nap, I rallied to meet my friend Shanna for a Predators home game. I haven't been to a Preds game in forever & had a blast! Shanna has season tickets & needed a seat partner for Saturday night's game. I willingly obliged. And the Preds won! It was so much fun.
On Sunday, my little ladies running group met for brunch at The Southern & then I meandered to Green Hills to cash in a Cosmetic Market coupon. Hello, Pumpkin Pie body wash from Philosophy!
My debit card was smoking, so I reined it in & went back home to Linda. Speaking of, I was trying to take a picture of her laying in the yard to send to John & she took off running towards me right when I snapped it. Action Linda! Heh!
In conclusion: my gallery wall is still not done, John is still out of town, Linda is inconsolable, & my hips still hurt from going HAM on Saturday.
