RIP, TiVo. RIP...

Friends, if you're not already sitting down, you better take a seat because I have some very upsetting news.  Last week, TiVo died.  I know, I know.  It's okay, I cried, too.  One night last week, I got home from a run, sat down on the couch (like you do) & turned on the tv.  Nothing.  Actually, that's a lie.  There was something, but it was the public access channel.  Not good.  Where's TiVo?  And why is the picture so squiggly?

A few weeks ago, John caught a mouse, so my first thought was that a mouse got back there & chewed through a wire.  Not so.  All the wires were in tact.  Which is actually kind of a relief.  I'd hate to think that TiVo suffered while a mouse slowly chewed through it's power cord.  Nope.  TiVo went like we all hope to, peacefully in its sleep.

I lost easily 3 weeks of recorded shows.  God knows what they were.  I'm still trying to figure it out.  Every time I talk to someone else, I remember another show that I forgot I watch.  Oy.  After an appropriate grieving period, I went to stupid Comcast & got their stupid DVR.  I told the rep that my TiVo died, to which he replied, "Well, you'll love your new DVR - no annoying noises or beeps."  Gasp!  How dare you.  I am in mourning!

John installed the new DVR last week & after waiting TWO DAYS for the menu to load, I'm slowly rebuilding my queue.  It's a work in progress.  I keep wanting to give shows the "thumbs up" so that this new DVR can learn what I like, but alas, there is no such button.  Speaking of the remote, why so many power buttons, Comcast?  I don't ever need to turn the box off.  One simple power button would have done it, thanks.

TiVo, I hope you're resting peacefully in that big box in the sky, recording things like Highway to Heaven & Touched By an Angel.  Say hi to my VCR.

RIP, TiVo.  RIP....

Weekend Wrap Up: Last Long Run Edition

Portlandia merch.

Proof of how rich I'd be if I didn't live next door to Target.

I'm never going to finish reading 1Q84.

My favorite:  massaman curry from Thai Phooket.

Last long training run before my half marathon.  11 miles:  done.

Post-run migas from Local Taco.

FRIDAY

John & I grabbed Indian & then headed to Marathon Music Works to see Portlandia.  We weren't sure what to expect.  The show started off well, really funny, but it took a turn about an hour in & never got back on track.  The show lost me when they passed mics thru the audience & let people ask questions.  The questions were horrible & it went on waaaaay too long.  Then they brought this Portland singer-songwriter on stage & basically let her have her own little mini show, except that her mini show was live karaoke.  She sang covers of "Break On Through" by The Doors & "Because The Night" by 10,000 Maniacs.  It was bizarre & it was bad.  People were leaving in droves.  We stuck it out, but it never got better.  It ended soon after that & we left.  We heard them come back out for an encore, but we didn't go back in.  I'm interested in what other people thought.  Am I just old?  Delaney?

SATURDAY

I wanted to get all of my errands run on Saturday in the likely event that I wouldn't be able to walk after my long run on Sunday.  I went to Target to grab a few things & left with a whole mess of stuff.  In related news, I now own more running clothes than non-running clothes.  I went to Dick's, Publix, Trader Joe's, Green Hills Mall, Hill Center - you name it, I probably went there.  Oh, & I got a hair cut. Productive day for sure.

That night, we met Keith & Nicole (not Urban) for dinner at Thai Phooket, which according to their menu, is "currently enjoying an international vogue."

SUNDAY

Sunday was our last long training run before the half marathon.  Me, Jaime, Cara & Mary Katherine ran  11 miles.  We started in Sylvan Park, ran to Belle Meade, ran the Boulevard, ran the Richland Greenway & then back to Sylvan Park.  Ya'll, it was far.  My knee was a little weird at first & I was afraid I was going to have to stop, but it ended up being fine.  I feel like I ran this one a lot slower than I usually do, but whatever.  I also experienced something new this time:  my legs & my brain not communicating with each other.  It's hard to explain, but at the last 2-ish miles, my legs had a hard time remembering what to do & I had will myself to keep going.  Jaime said it's really common around 11-13 miles & that I'll probably experience the same thing on race day.  Whatevs, I finished & then I ate the heck out of some migas at Local Taco.

Next week we're going to run the 5.8 in Percy Warner & then the next Saturday is the race.  Almost there!

Post-run, I made some potato cheese soup & drove it over to Jessica & Brian in East Nashville.  Speaking of, if any of you would like to sign up to bring them food, please let me know.  I need more people to volunteer.  Email me & I'll forward you the sign up sheet.  Thanks!

Last night I tried to watch The Oscars, but feel asleep pretty early on.  Whatever, I watched all of the red carpet coverage & that's all I really care about anyway.  Who were your favorites?  I think mine were Gwyneth (obvi), Michelle Williams, & Rooney Mara.  I also really liked Viola Davis & Cameron Diaz.  I hated Jennifer Lopez (go away!) & Melissa McCarthy.  I'm on the fence about Emma Stone & Jessica Chastain.  I normally LOVE Alexander McQueen, but for some reason, I didn't love Jessica's look last night.  What did ya'll think?

Group Fitness, When Will I Learn?

I've been doing something stupid lately, I've quit strength training.  I used to take strength training classes at the Y twice a week, but I quit going back in the fall because I was bored with the classes.  Plus, I was doing yoga twice a week, so it kind of balanced out.

In what has been a little bit of a surprise to me, I have not lost weight as I've been training for the half marathon.  I'm burning enough calories to easily result in a 2-3 lb weight loss every week.  The problem is, well there are two problems:  1) I'm eating too much, shocker; & 2) I'm not doing strength training.

I had lunch with my friend Mark last week, who has successfully lost a crap-ton of weight & has really changed the way his body looks over the past two years.  Mark couldn't believe I wasn't losing weight either, especially since I'm burning up to 1400 calories on some days.  He asked me two things, am I tracking my calories & am I strength training?  No & no.  I HATE tracking my calories.  Hate!  But...  if you've ever seen me skinny, it's because I was tracking my calories, so there's that.  I told him my conundrum with strength training - that I'm bored with the classes & was doing yoga, but now have gotten too busy to even do that.

Mark said he'd bet money that if I started strength training again, I'd drop some lbs.  He said to either start going back to the classes or come in & do the free weights on my own.  Ha!  On my own.  Has me met me?  I only exercise as a vehicle for seeing & talking to my friends.  But he has a point.  He said I should check out magazines like Women's Health or Shape & use the work-outs they provide in their magazines, which again, is a valid point.

I didn't strength train last week, but I did swim twice with my injured friend, MHG.  Just adding two swim days to my routine last week resulted in a 2 lb weight loss.  Ha!  Who knew?  God, I love swimming.  This week I had planned on meeting MHG at the Y on two morning to strength train with her, but I haven't been able to because of work, so the other night I went to a group fitness class at the Green Hills Y.  Apparently there's a big difference between classes at the Downtown Y & classes at the Green Hills Y.  Sculpt class Downtown is 45 minutes of free weights.  Sculpt class in Green Hills is boot camp, with no weights & lots of obstacle course style running.

We had to set our benches up around the room like an obstacle course & then we formed a congo line & ran all around the room, jumping over things & running sideways & backwards.  I was annoyed that we weren't using weights, but I was having a little fun running around the room like an idiot until.....  my knee gave out.  Yeah, apparently my knees are cool with running 10 miles, but jumping & sideways running, not so much.

I was so mad.  Mid-class, I grabbed my stuff & limped out of the room.  By the time I got home, my knee was super swollen & sore, so I took an Aleve & iced it & it was fine by morning.  I didn't run last night in an abundance of caution.  I think it's okay.  I hope so because I'm running 11 miles this Sunday & I kind of need my knees to work.

Ugh, group fitness.  When will I learn?!

Where I Profess My Love For Brad Goreski

{Source:  Small Screen Scoop}

I'm kind of obsessed with Brad Goreski.  You know who I'm talking about.  He was Rachel Zoe's assistant on The Rachel Zoe Project.  Now he has his own show on Bravo called It's a Brad Brad World.  Are you watching it?  It's so good!  I thought it would be all fashion-y like TRZP, but it's not.  It's honestly, for me at least, more about the 10-year relationship between Brad & Gary.  Oh, Gary.  How do I love thee, let me count the ways.

First of all, I want their house.  OMG.  Secondly, I kind of want to fight they do on the show.  It's hilarious.  When they're in Milan, I love how Gary thinks all the Italian women at the hotel are in love with him & have no idea he's gay, even though he & Brad are sharing a room with one bed.  Bless him.

Love this show. Love Brad. Love Gary.

Brian & Jessica, parents-to-be.

The spread.

The cake!

Me, Deepa, Jessica, Brandi, & Shannon.

Sunday = catch up on magazines day.

Bra top?  Really, Lucky?  Really?

More pics & info available on Flickr! & Instagram.

FRIDAY

I had to go to Lawrenceburg on Friday.  This just in:  Amish people still exist!  These pics are actually my mom's.  I tried to take pics, but couldn't pull if off while driving.

SATURDAY

I hosted a baby shower for our friends Brian & Jessica.  A BIG thanks to my mom & my friend Alexis who spent Saturday morning helping me clean, cook, & set up for the shower.  Thank you!!  This was the first baby shower I've ever hosted & I kind of had no idea what I was doing.  Luckily, Jessica didn't want a traditional shower, so I basically just threw a party, which I do know how to do.

SUNDAY

My long run yesterday got rained/snowed out, so OF COURSE I spent the whole day doing nothing but making poor food choices.  I also spent a good amount of time reading magazines.  Are we all in agreement that Lucky sucks without Kim France?  I've subscribed to that magazine since it was born, but I think I'm done with it.  What fashion magazines do you still read?

Weekend Wrap Up: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Runner Edition

Saturday morning snow.

This is my cold face.

Cupcakes!

Old Made Good.

Who has 2 thumbs & just ran 10 miles?  This girl.

More pics & info on Flickr! & Instagram.

FRIDAY

I watched Midnight In Paris.  I liked it.  I had heard mixed reviews & I honestly don't love Owen Wilson, so I wasn't expecting to like it, but I totally did.  It's hard not to like a movie about Paris.  Also, I was really into Rachel McAdams' hair & wardrobe throughout the movie.

SATURDAY

It was super cold & snowy when I woke up on Saturday, so I decided to bake.  I ended up making the browned butter cupcakes with chocolate buttercream frosting again.  I quickly realized that it was in no one's best interest to leave me alone in the house all day with 24 cupcakes, so I took my show on the road.  My first stop was Jessica's house because she's pregnant & I knew I could unload a lot of cupcakes.  We ran to Old Made Good, which I've been wanting to check out FOREVER.  I loved that place!  Both owners were in there & they were so nice.  Jessica got an awesome necklace & I got these cute arrow earrings.  J'adore!

Back on the road, cupcakes still in tow, I headed over to Dave & Alexis' house, where I unloaded another good portion of cupcakes.  I tried to find more people to deliver cupcakes to, but a lot of people weren't home.  Accepting defeat, I headed back home, where I promptly ate another cupcake.

That night, we went to dinner with our friends Mike & Amanda.  Mike's birthday is today (happy birthday, Mike!), so it was an early birthday celebration.  It was also a great opportunity to unload those last few cupcakes.  Success!

SUNDAY

On Sunday, I awoke to a balmy 21 degrees, wind chill of 12 degrees.  PERFECT for a long, outdoor run.  I put on as many layers as I could comfortably fit into & then headed out to meet my running posse.  We met at Bongo Java on Belmont, ran to Bong Java at Five Points, then turned around & ran back.  It's a 10 mile loop, although according to RunKeeper, it was actually 10.34.  Whatevs, it could have been 100 miles as far as I was concerned because by the time we finished I could feel neither my face nor my legs, except for my feet.  Oh, I felt those.

The jury is still out on which was harder, running in 12 degrees, or running 10 miles.  I will say this, my legs have gone back to normal, but my nose, a full 24 hours later, is still red.  Apparently I have wind burn, but I look sunburned.  It's confusing.  Whatever.  Point?  I'm a badass.

Song Of The Week: Gotye, "Somebody That I Used To Know"

I may be late to the party on this, but have you heard of Gotye?  It's pronounced (go-tee-yay) like Jean Paul Gaultier, the fashion designer.  My friend Aaron turned me on to him & I just bought the album.  Gotye is Wouter "Wally" De Backer.  He's a singer-songwriter from Australia.  I haven't listened to the whole album yet, but I've been hearing the song "Somebody That I Used To Know" on KEXP & I'm OBSESSED with that song.  Seriously, I listened to it on repeat all the way to work yesterday.  Obsessed!

Shockingly, John likes him, too.  Ya'll, John & I liking the same band at the same time happens less often than a total eclipse, so this is big.  John says he reminds him of Sting.  I say Yeasayer.  John's probably right.

Here is the video for "Somebody That I Used To Know".  It's possibly not safe for work, depending on who can see your monitor.  They never actually show anything, but it looks like they're going to.  Stick with it, the song really picks up around minute 3:00.  And if there's anything I like more than hand claps & high hats, it's a background vocal.  I love this song!

The entire album is only $7.99 on Amazon.  I highly recommend buying it.  And then painting your entire body.

Weekend Wrap Up: Sans Photos Edition

Whoops!  I totally forgot to take pictures this weekend.  Try to make it through the week without knowing what color I painted my nails, how far I ran & what I ate immediately after.

FRIDAY

I met some friends at Chago's after work, ate too much cheese dip (in all fairness, they serve it in a TROUGH) & then came home, where I probably ate a Klondike Bar & fell asleep on the couch.  Baller, I know.

SATURDAY

I woke up Saturday morning to a torrential downpour, which wouldn't have mattered so much if I hadn't been registered to run a 5K.  After a lot of back & forth, Claudia & I decided to go ahead & run it & if it started raining too hard, we'd just run to our cars & drive to brunch.  It did rain on us the entire race, but the course went nowhere near where we parked, so we finished.

Saturday night, John & I introduced our friend Aaron to Woodlands Indian Vegetarian Cuisine.  Aaron loved it, we ordered half the menu, ate ourselves sick, but then....  We get home & receive a text from Aaron saying that he's about to drive himself to the hospital because he's having a severe allergic reaction.  Aaron is allergic to tree nuts, which were apparently in EVERYTHING we ate.  Sorry...

SUNDAY

I got up early on Sunday & met Jaime at Percy Warner.  We're ahead of our training schedule & Cara was sick, so we decided to just do the 5.8 trail run.  This is only the second time I've run this course & I somehow forgot that's it ALL UPHILL.  Oy.

So apparently there was a game on last night?  I don't know, I just saw something on Facebook.  John & I are assuredly the least non-sports people you know.  We stayed home & ate steak, which is what happens when I let John go to the grocery store....  I did manage to tune in for the halftime show though.  Team Madge!

A Day In Photos: Springfield, Tennessee

More pics & info available on Flickr! & Instagram.

Earlier this week, I spent a day in Springfield, Tennessee, which is about 40 minutes north of Nashville.  I had some time between meetings, so I walked around & snapped some pics of the town square.  This was my first time in Springfield & I was pretty impressed with their square.  Most southern small towns still have big courthouses & town squares, but few utilize them in the way Springfield seems to.  There were few to none empty store fronts.  Pretty much all of them were occupied, mostly with law offices as they surround the Robertson County Courthouse.  Speaking of, I was lucky enough to get a tour.  The courthouse was built in 1879 & is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Although it's needed renovations, the 133 year old courthouse is still in use.  And let me just say, it's beautiful!  The actual court room has all the original fixtures, moldings, pews, etc.  It's huge & it's gorgeous.

Non-Nashvillians may not know that Nashville was founded by James Robertson.  Robertson is a pretty big name in Middle Tennessee.  In 1796, the state's first general assembly met in Knoxville to organize a new state government & the name Tennessee was officially adopted.  An act passed by that assembly provided for the division of Tennessee County into 2 counties.  The eastern half was named Robertson in honor of James Robertson.  The act also provided for the commissioners to purchase the 50 acres of land for Robertson County's seat of government & specified that the town be named Springfield.  Speaking of Springfield....  According to Wikipedia, Springfield may be the long-awaited location of The Simpsons Springfield, after an episode revealed that it was "Tennessee Titans Country"....  I'm just saying.

One other quick claim to fame, Robertson County is also home Adams, Tennessee.  Oh, you know Adams.  It's where the BELL WITCH CAVE is!  Right, Caryn?

Spicy Stir-Fried Sesame Chicken with Green Beans & Shiitake Mushrooms

My husband is OBSESSED with stir-fries.  I don't complain because a) I like them, too; b) they're usually fairly healthy; & c) he makes them, so I don't have to cook!  We got a new cookbook for Christmas & John has been working his way through all the new stir-fry recipes.  They've been okay, but this one, this one, wins the prize.  It was so good!  It's a little bit of work, but it's worth it.  I highly recommend using this "velveted chicken" recipe for all future stir-fries.  It'll blow your chicken mind!

Spicy Stir-Fried Sesame Chicken with Green Beans & Shiitake Mushrooms

Adapted from The New Best Recipe

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup low-sodium chicken broth
3 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp dry sherry
1 tbsp plus 1 tsp Asian chili sauce
1 tbsp plus 1 tsp sugar
1 tsp cornstarch
1 tbsp sesame seeds
2 tsp toasted sesame oil
3 medium garlic cloves, minced
1 tsp minced fresh ginger
Peanut oil
*1 recipe Marinated Velveted Chicken for Stir-Fry with 1 tbsp sesame seeds added to the flour mixture
1 lb green beans, ends trimmed, & cut on the bias into 1-inch pieces
8 ounces shiitake mushrooms, stems discarded, caps sliced 1/8 inch thick
Jasmine rice (optional)

*MARINATED VELVETED CHICKEN FOR STIR-FRY

1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup dry sherry
1 cup water
1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts, trimmed of excess fat
2 tbsp toasted sesame oil
1 tbsp cornstarch
1 tbsp unbleached all-purpose flour

1.  Combine the soy sauce, sherry, & water in a medium bowl; add the chicken & stir to break up the clumps.  Cover with plastic wrap & refrigerate at least 20 minutes or up to 1 hour.

2.  Mix the sesame oil, cornstarch, & flour together in a medium bowl until smooth.  Drain the chicken in a mesh strainer.  Toss the chicken in the cornstarch-flour mixture until evenly coated.  Use immediately.

DIRECTIONS

1.  Whisk the chicken broth, soy sauce, sherry, chili sauce, sugar, cornstarch, 2 tsp of the sesame seeds, 1 tsp of the sesame oil, & 1 tsp of the garlic together in a small bowl until combined.  Combine the remaining 2 tsp garlic, the ginger, & 1 tsp peanut oil in a small bowl.

2.  Heat 2 tsp peanut oil in a 12-inch nonstick skillet (we used cast iron) over high heat until smoking; add half of the chicken in a flat even layer.  Cook, without stirring but gently separating the pieces, until golden brown on the first side, about 1 minute; turn the chicken pieces & cook until lightly browned on the second side, about 30 seconds.  Transfer the chicken to a clean bowl.  Repeat with an additional 2 tsp peanut oil & the remaining chicken.

3.  Add 1 tbsp peanut oil to the now empty skillet; heat until just smoking.  Add the green beans & cook, stirring occasionally, for 1 minute; add the mushrooms & stir-fry until the mushrooms are lightly browned & softened, about 3 minutes.  Push the vegetables to the sides of the skillet to clear the center; add the garlic-ginger mixture to the clearing & cook, mashing the mixture with a spoon, until fragrant & golden brown, 30-45 seconds, then stir the mixture into the beans & mushrooms.  Continue to stir-fry until the beans are tender-crisp, about 30 seconds longer.  Return the chicken to the skillet.  Whisk the sauce to recombine, then add to the skillet; reduce the the heat to medium & cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce is thickened & the chicken is cooked through, about 30 seconds.  Transfer to a serving platter, drizzle with the remaining 1 tsp sesame oil, & sprinkle with the remaining 1 tsp sesame seeds.

Serve over jasmine rice.

1Q84: The Heaviest Book IN THE WORLD (Not A Book Review)

John bought me 1Q84 for Christmas.  In hardback.  I don't know how many of you have seen this book in its hardback version, or tried to lift it.  Ya'll, it weighs like 15 pounds & is IMPOSSIBLE to read in bed.  I've had to find things to prop it up on so I can read it.  And if you think that's a champagne problem, wait until I tell you what I did to resolve this problem that isn't really a problem.

Last night, in yet another futile attempt to prop this book up so that I can read 2 pages before falling asleep, a light bulb went off in my head & I remembered I got a Kindle for Christmas.  Ding, ding, ding!  And a $25 Kindle gift card (thanks, Tiff!), so I bought the kindle version of 1Q84 & commenced reading it on my 7-ounce electronic reading device.  I sat up & read all night.  Apparently the weight of the book was not only logistically cumbersome, but was also slowing down my normal super fast reading speed.  Maybe I'll finish this book after all (probably not).
